West Virginia COVID-19 Weekly Update

 The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 3, 2023, there have been eight deaths reported since last week’s dashboard update, with a total of 8,117 deaths attributed to COVID-19.  DHHR has confirmed the deaths of a 74-year old male from Raleigh County, an 89-year old female from Randolph County, a 59-year old male from Kanawha County, an 82-year old male from Cabell County, an 80-year old female from Kanawha County, a 57-year old male from Kanawha County, an 83-year old female from Monroe County, and a 72-year old female from Berkeley County.  West…

Poster Contest for Mental Health Awareness Month

Becki Clark, Director of the Allegany County Local Behavioral Health Authority, spoke with WCBC recently about a poster contest going on during Mental Health Awareness month.  Clark said the contest is open to grades K-12 with prizes. The theme is “What Healthy Activity Helps You Cope With Stress?” Entries may be submitted directly to the Local Behavioural Health Authority at the Allegany County Health Department by May 8th.

The Friday at 5 music series kicks off tonight at the intersection of South Centre Street and Union Street. CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Thursday, May 4, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Jessica Brooks.  The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing for charges against Brooks at the District Court of Allegany County.  Brooks signed for her copy of the summons and was released pending trial. BENCH WARRANT SERVED

On Thursday, May 4, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Christopher Runyon.  The warrant was issued due to Runyon failing to comply with an order of the court.  Runyon was originally charged with driving on a suspended license and privilege.  He was arrested and transported to Central Booking.  He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond. Jay Lowder Guest Speaker For National Day of Prayer Breakfast

Jay Lowder of Harvest Ministries in Texas was the guest speaker at the annual National Day of Prayer Breakfast on Thursday morning at the Ali-Ghan Shrine Club.  Established in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, the National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May that brings together all faiths and traditions to pray for the nation.  Lowder spoke to WCBC after the breakfast about how he found himself in Cumberland for the event…

Warning sent from Anne Arundel Public Schools to seniors could apply to seniors in Allegany County Public Schools

MD Gov. Moore signed new laws dealing with Transgender equity, Abortion access. Recreational marijuana

Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed several bills on Wednesday including new laws dealing with issues including transgender equity, healthcare, and abortion access. Recreational marijuana legislation goes into effect July 1 and will allow adults age 21 and older the ability to legally possess up to 1.5 ounces of marijuana.  It was revealed on Tuesday that the governor has $1.2 million dollars in stock in a cannabis company. That investment is now being handled in a blind trust to prevent a conflict of interest.

PA Governor Shapiro breaking ground on new Veteran’s facility
