Handgun Arrest
On April 13th, 2023, deputies with the Allegany County Sheriff's Office were alerted of a possible domestic assault victim. Deputies were able to locate and speak with the victim at an undisclosed location. Investigating deputies learned that a female victim had allegedly been assaulted on the evening of April 12th, 2023 at her Orleans, MD residence by Lucas Leroy Coleman, (43 of Orleans, MD). Baltimore Street Assault Arrest
On April 12th, 2023 at approximately 12:39 pm officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 200 block of Baltimore Street for a reported assault. Upon officer’s arrival they spoke with the victim who advised that Shawn Gladden had assaulted them, and was not to be at the residence by an order of the District Court due to a previous assault investigation. Violation of Court Order Arrest:
On Wednesday April 12th, 2023 officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 300 block of Pear Street for a reported breaking and entering in progress. Upon officer’s arrival they spoke with the victim who advised that they had a protective order against Michael Meredith Jr, and that he was not to contact with the victim or be at the victim’s residence. Meredith was placed under arrest and taken before a District Court Commissioner where he was held on a $1,000 bond. Arrest: Michael Fancis Meredith Jr, age 41, Cumberland Maryland. Arrest Warrants Served
On Wednesday April 12th, 2023 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on Robert Whitacre III. The Arrest Warrant was issued by the Circuit Court when he violated the conditions of his probation. Whitacre was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond. Cumberland Mayor Morriss spoke about future plans for public “Loos”
Residents driving through the downtown Cumberland area may have noticed by now that the fountain located for years at the intersection of Baltimore and Mechanic Streets has been removed as part of the re-imagining of the downtown area. Mayor Ray Morriss spoke to WCBC about what the future plans hold for that area in the reconstruction – including a place for visitors to sit as well as public “loos” or restrooms designed for quick and convenient use.
Delegate Buckel says biggest hurdles facing Allegany County is a numbers game
One of the biggest hurdles facing Allegany County is purely a numbers game. Delegate Jason Buckel was on the Dave Norman show Wednesday morning and discussed that the power to move and influence the legislature in the direction of Western Maryland would increase if population in the region increased overall. While giving the 2023 legislative session a “C+” grade, Buckel admitted it is a long-haul for the region to get the attention that other areas of the state receive.
UNDBIO Pharmaceutical company coming Morgantown, West Virginia
Morgantown, West Virginia will be getting 200 new jobs with the location of a South Korean pharmaceutical company coming to the area. Governor Jim Justice made the announcement Wednesday in Charleston that the company is making a $100 million dollar investment in phase one of its business development plan. The company, UNDBIO, provides diabetic care solutions and will be leasing from the WVU Research Park to build an insulin-manufacturing facility. According to the American Diabetes Association, 51 million people in North America have diabetes.
MD STATE POLICE HELICOPTER CREW HELPS RESCUE LOST MAN
A Maryland State Police helicopter helped rescue an elderly man after he became lost and hurt late Thursday morning. The 82-year-old man was found in a ravine of a densely forested area north of the Cheat River shortly before 11 a.m. He disappeared the day before from the Erwin community of Preston County, nearly eight miles from the Maryland-West Virginia line. Rescuers from the Preston County Sheriff’s Office, Rowlesburg Volunteer Fire Department and the Mountaineer Area Rescue Group were in their 14th hour of searching for the elderly man when he was located. Washington Commanders Team Sold
Washington Commanders team owner Dan Snyder has reportedly reached an "agreement in principle" to sell the team for $6 billion to a group led by Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils co-owner Josh Harris. The Harris group also includes billionaire Mitchell Rales and NBA legend Magic Johnson. Sportico first reported the sale. Snyder and Harris are reportedly hoping to execute a contract in a few days.
