County Schools Announce New Supervisors, Directors

Allegany Public Schools have new central office appointments for the 2025-26 academic year. Katherine Loughrie will serve as the county’s Chief Academic Officer. She has been in the school system for 21 years as a teacher, vice principal and supervisor. Dr. Wendy Main is the new Director of Special Education and Student Services. Main has been with the county for 30 years working in the area of Special Education. Dr. Kendra Kenney moves from Principal of Washington Middle School to Director of Special Education for the county where she has worked for 29 years.

Downtown Business Owner Not Happy With Parking Fines

The City of Cumberland’s attempts to cut down on drivers parking illegally in handicapped parking spaces has one downtown business owner considering the future of his business.  Jim Weir, owner of Awesome Gifts and Collectibles, owns a corner property at Baltimore and North Centre Streets. Mountain Ridge Meet The Squad Night

Parents and fans of the Mountain Ridge Miners will have a chance tonight to meet the sports teams the school is fielding for the coming school year. Starting at 7pm at Miners’ Stadium, there will be a parade of squads for both boys and girls sports as well as a performance from the school’s band. Teams will be introduced by their coaches and there will be remarks from school principal Danny Carter. Frostburg Mayor Todd Logsdon will serve as emcee for the evening.

Further Charges To Be Filed After Child’s Death

Two Lonaconing residents will be facing further charges after the death of a 17-month old boy on Tuesday. Kayle Lynn Keller, age 25, and Liam Robert Lafferty, age 23, both of Lonaconing, have already been charged with 1st Degree Child Abuse, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, and Reckless Endangerment. States Attorney James Elliott tells WCBC that the investigation is continuing and he expects other charges will be filed against the two in the coming week. The two are being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.

CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Monday, August 25, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Phillip Kaplon.  The summons was issued as the result of an incident that occurred on August, 7 2025 at approximately 11:51 AM when an officer responded to a business on W. Industrial Blvd.  for a shoplifting complaint.  Police contacted the staff who reported that Kaplon stole items from the store.  After further investigation, police filed for charges against Kaplon at the District Court of Allegany County.  Kaplon signed for his copy of the summons and he was released pending trial. UPMC Earns Recognition For Stroke Care

Four locations of UPMC have earned national recognition for Excellence in Stroke Care.  Three Pennsylvania locations – Altoona, Bedford and Somerset – received “Get With The Guidelines” Stroke awards. UPMC Western Maryland received a Gold Plus award as well as being named to the Target Stroke Honor Roll and the Target Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. For Gold Plus Status, hospitals must reach 85% compliance across numerous quality measures for at least 24 consecutive months.

PA Republicans Urged to Fund Transit Programs

Pennsylvania’s transportation authority in the southeast part of the state is facing a $200 million budget gap, with service cuts and fare hikes expected September 1. Lawmakers approved short-term funding but critics say it takes money for transit repairs and shifts it to unrelated road projects. Senator Nikil Saval opposed the funding…     “Transit agencies would end up with less money than they had through this proposal. So they’re robbing transit. They’re defunding transit to pay for transit. It’s a completely insane proposal.”

Four Shot Outside Hagerstown Bar

One person is in critical condition following a shooting early Sunday morning outside a Hagerstown Bar. Officers from the Washington County Sheriff’s office responded to the Chop Bar on JFK Drive in Hagerstown where a large crowd had gathered outside. Officers determined that four victims had received gunshot wounds. Three of the victims received non-life threatening injuries. Law enforcement is encouraging anyone with information on the incident to contact the Sheriff’s office.

Van Hollen to Observe Aid Efforts in Gaza

Maryland’s U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen along with Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley is traveling to the Mid-East this week to check on humanitarian aid in the Gaza strip. The senators will observe humanitarian aid efforts to Gaza as well as demand the immediate release of hostages in the region. They will also meet with communities in the West Bank and discuss ongoing violence and recent attacks on Christian communities.
