This is the weekend to clean out your closet, attic, garage or perhaps that storage unit. The 21st Annual National Road Yard Sale is this Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. Hidden treasures will be available along the National highway and in downtown Cumberland.  Let's Beautify Cumberland along with the Downtown Cumberland Business Association is providing spaces in the parking lot of the Cumberland Times-News off of Mechanic Street as a fundraiser to help with the Cumberland Clock project. CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Collin Taylor.  The summons was issued as the result of an incident that occurred on May 18, 2024.  On this date at approximately 7:19 PM, officers responded to the 300 block of Furnace Street for the report of dirt bikes riding up and down the street.  Police contacted the caller who reported that the riders were riding in front of their residence and cursing at the.  After further investigation, one of the riders was identified as Collin Taylor.  Police filed for charges against Taylor at the…

Donate Blood and Have Fun Too!

Blood donation – but make it fun.  The Red Cross is going retro with its latest blood drive for the summer holidays.  Until June 9, those who donate blood, plasma, or platelets will receive a 40th anniversary Tetris t-shirt. Donors will also be entered for a chance to win a trip to New York to meet Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov. Upcoming blood drives include Allegany College of Maryland and Cumberland Community Church on June 3 and First Presbyterian Church on June 4. 

Traditional Mall Tax Changing

With a ribbon cutting date set for the reimagined downtown Cumberland, thoughts are turning to plans on keeping the new area clean and safe for shoppers. For years, a mall tax has been imposed to pay for upkeep of the area. BENCH WARRANT SERVED

On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a Circuit Court bench warrant on Corbit Arrowood.  The warrant was issued as the result of Arrowood failing to appear in court.  He was originally charged with CDS: Possess-Not Cannabis.  Arrowood was arrested and transported to the Allegany County Detention Center where he is currently being held without bond pending his appearance before the court. WV Department of Health Urges Protection Against Lyme Disease

The West Virginia Department of Health is urging residents to take preventive measures against Lyme disease as ticks are more active this time of year.  West Virginia has been designated as a high incidence Lyme disease state since 2017. “Lyme disease is a serious issue that could be devastating to your health and well-being if left untreated,” said Dr. Matthew Christiansen, State Health Officer. He went on to encourage citizens to take precautions against the infection and protect themselves outdoors especially in areas where ticks are most commonly found.

EZ Pass Users Targeted by Scammers

The State of Maryland’s EZ-Pass users are the latest to be targeted in telephone scams.  The Attorney General’s office is reporting residents are receiving text messages that falsely indicate money is owed for unpaid tolls. The message includes a link to settle the outstanding amount.  The AG’s office advises individuals not to click any links or provide financial information. The legitimate link for EZ Pass is driveezmd.com.

Governor Vetoes Bill That Would Lift Estate Notices in Newspapers

Governor Moore decided to use his veto power on House Bill 1258, which would have lifted the requirement that estate notices be published in newspapers. Allegany Sheriff’s department Arrests Made on May 28th

Amber Nicole Tallman, 29 of Cumberland, was arrested on a District Court Warrant for charges including: Contribute to the Condition of a Child, Neglect of Minor, and Reckless Endangerment. Tallman is being held on a $5,000 bond at the Allegany County Detention Center. Madison Brook-Denean Tranum, 24 of Piedmont, West Virginia was arrested on a District Court Bench Warrant for Failure to Appear. Charges include: Burglary-4th Degree-Dwelling, Trespass Private Property, Assault-2nd Degree, Disorderly Conduct, Disturb Peace/Disorderly, Harassment Course of Conduct, and Telephone Misuse Repeat Calls. Gov. Jim Justice announced over the Memorial Day weekend, the West Virginia Waterfall Trail surpassed 75,000 participant check-ins. The popularity of the nation’s first statewide waterfall trail continues to grow, with data showing that visitors from all 50 U.S. states and 41 countries are now joining the fun. As the summer season kicks off, the Department of Tourism is adding three more falls, bringing the total number of stellar stops along the trail to 43.
