Citizens Should Verify Credentials When Using Automotive Dismantler/Recycler Services

The Maryland State Police remind citizens to use caution and verify credentials when using Automotive Dismantler and Recycler (ADR) and Scrap Processor services in Maryland. More commonly, Automotive Dismantler and Recycler (ADR) and Scrap Processor services post signs and advertisements, meant to entice citizens to purchase and/or sell automotive goods, ranging from used cars, RV’s/campers, trailers, to scrap metal. According to Maryland law, individuals are prohibited from conducting the business of automotive dismantling and recycling (or scrap processing) without proper licensing. Cumberland Police Department Press Release

On 02/15/24 at 1418hrs the Emergency Operations Center received a call in reference to shots fired in the area of Bishop Walsh High School. As a result officers from the Cumberland Police Department, Allegany County Sheriff's Office, and Maryland State Police responded to the area. Upon arrival everything was found to be normal with no shoots being fired or observed from this area. Officers conducted safety checks of both Bishop Walsh and Allegany High School with nothing out of the ordinary being observed. Both schools remained in a normal operating procedure. 

Brief Lockdown At Bishop Walsh, Allegany This Afternoon – Now Lifted

Allegany and Bishop Walsh High Schools were on a brief lockdown Thursday afternoon after Allegany Emergency Services and Cumberland Police received numerous calls of people in the area hearing gunfire. Both Maryland State Police and Cumberland Police checked both schools.  After checking the areas of the schools, it was determined the gun shots were coming from an area gun range.  Lockdowns were lifted at both schools.

Tax-Free Weekend For Energy-Star Purchases

“Shop Maryland Energy Weekend” will return from February 17 to February19. Maryland waives the 6% sales tax for qualifying Energy Star products, helping consumers save money while investing in the environment. The sales tax exemption applies to both new and used qualifying products purchased online or in-person. Energy Star products include washers and dryers, furnaces, standard refrigerators, and programmable thermostats. Switching to energy-efficient appliances can also lead to some federal clean energy tax credits.

Flying Boxcars Announce Stadium Naming Rights

The Hagerstown Flying Boxcars baseball team is slated to begin their season in late April and this week have announced the name for their brand new stadium.  Meritus Park in downtown Hagerstown will be home to 65 games as well as other events in the 2024 season.  Meritus Health will serve as the Flying Boxcar’s official sports medicine provider, ensuring the players have routine physicals and wellness appointments, as well as orthopedic care, physical therapy, and access to other services as needed. The Flying Boxcars are part of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.

Cumberland Woman served 7 Warrants

On Wednesday, February 14th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Jakela Tonice Watkins, 34, of Cumberland MD. Watkins was wanted on seven outstanding warrants issued by both the Circuit and District Courts of Allegany County. Three bench warrants issued by the Circuit Court allege Watkins failed to appear for a trial, violated the terms of her probation, and violated the conditions of pre-trial release, respectively. A fourth Bench warrant alleged Watkins failed to appear for trial in District Court on a previous m/v theft charge. The fifth warrant was issued for an incident that occurred on December 3rd, 2023. Indecent Exposure Criminal Summons Served

On Friday, February 9th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police served a criminal summons on Richard Leo Lambert Sr, 73, of Cumberland MD. The summons was in reference to multiple incidents that occurred between January 15th, and February 5th, 2024, at an apartment building in the 200 block of Baltimore Ave. During these incidents, it is alleged Lambert indecently exposed himself in public areas of the building. Lambert was served the summons and released, pending trial in District Court. Arrested: Richard Leo Lambert Sr.         Age: 73 Charges: Indecent Exposure x4, Disorderly Conduct.

Bench Warrants Served

On Wednesday, February 14th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Shawn Lamar Gladden, 41, of Cumberland MD. Gladden was arrested on an outstanding Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on February 13th, 2024. The warrant alleges Gladden violated the terms and conditions of his probation that stemmed from a previous conviction on charges of resisting arrest. He was taken before the District Court Commissioner for his initial appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held on $5000 bond. Make it! In The Mountains Launched

That’s Allegany County Tourism Director Ashli Workman announcing the launch of a new joint website for Allegany and Garrett Counties.  MakeItInTheMountains.com is a workforce initiative by the counties and the Maryland Department of Commerce. Funded through the Appalachian Regional Commission, the website and strategy addresses the need for a business recruitment plan to attract companies producing goods including kayaks, boats, bikes or ATVs to locate in Western Maryland by trading on the natural beauty, quality of life, and affordability of the region.
