Somerset County man faces prison time for tax evasion

Jason R. Svonavec 44-year-old of Rockwood pleaded guilty to two counts of tax evasion and filing a false income tax return before U.S. District Judge Cathy Bissoon in the U.S. Western District of Pennsylvania. In 2017, Svonavec illegally expensed the construction of his home in Somerset through entities he operates called Heritage Coal and Natural Resources LLC and Banshee Crane. A tax return filed in 2018 reporting false tax deductions for Heritage Coal and Natural Resources LLC involving his home. Over the past three days (01/19/24 – 01/21/24) , the department has been receiving complaints of vehicle’s windows being shot by a BB gun in the area of East & West First Streets and Virginia Avenue.  The incidents have been reported at random times; however the incidents have mainly occurred during the late afternoon into the evening hours. DISORDERLY CONDUCT ARREST

On January 19th, 2024 at approximately 4:45 p.m, officers from the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business located in the 100 block of Baltimore Street for the report of a disturbance. Upon arrival an employee from the business advised officers that a female inside of the store was grabbing items off the shelf and stating that she was going to take them. Women’s Swimming Drops Tri-Meet to Retrievers, Sea Gulls

Frostburg State Women's Swimming team fell in their tri-meet on Saturday afternoon, losing to UMBC 162-43 and Salisbury 145-60. The team of sophomore Gabriela Betancourt, senior Maree Dieterich, junior Kendall Hooper, and freshman Gabriella Douglas knotted the highest finish in the day for Frostburg, posting a 1:54.50 time in the 200-yard medley relay for a second place finish. Route 36 Closed in Midland Due to Accident Saturday Night

Allegany County Emergency Services reported shortly before 8PM that a head on collision had closed Route 36 just north of Midland. The road was reopened at 8:46PM.    

Baltimore Ravens Looking to Make Super Bowl Run

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the Houston Texans Saturday evening, 34-10, to advance to the AFC title game next Sunday.  The Ravens will play the winner of the Kansas City-Buffalo game. Baltimore was tied with Houston at halftime before exploding 24-0 in the second half.

Temporary Traffic Pattern Change Monday

In an effort to maintain access to downtown businesses while allowing the contractor to safely complete construction on Liberty Street and Centre Street, the City of Cumberland Engineering Department would like to notify the public of a temporary traffic pattern change. Beginning on Monday, January 21st, North Centre Street between Baltimore Street and Frederick Street, as well as North Liberty Street between Baltimore Street and Frederick Street, will be closed for vehicular through traffic.
