Group Ties Asthma, Attendance to Steel Mill Partnership
The proposed deal between US Steel and Nippon Steel has one environmental group in Pennsylvania concerned. The merger would supposedly add billions of dollars to the US economy and create 70,000 jobs. But Dr. Deborah Gentile said pollution near the Clairton steel plant played a role in child asthma and school attendance… “We were curious to see if this was leading to school absenteeism. So we found that on high pollution days, if the particulate matter is very small, tiny fine particle pollution, we’re finding a 20% increase in school absenteeism among asthmatic children on those days.”

No Real Explanation for Gas Price Differences
With families traveling more often during the summer months, naturally the price of gasoline becomes a concern. In Western Maryland, the price of gas has historically been 20 to 40 cents higher per gallon than other areas of the state. What’s the explanation? House Minority Leader Jason Buckel says there seems to be no real rhyme of reason for the difference, except perhaps the amount of competition… “We don’t have as many types or competing gas stations in our region as you well know. You go to Ocean City, they might have 15, 20 different types of retailers…

Ellen Allen with West Virginians for Affordable Healthcare says distance to care is critical for those having babies… “I know a young woman in the southern part of the state who says, ‘we’re thinking about having a family, but my closest hospital would be 90 minutes away. What if I have…
