Baltimore Street Grant Program Approved
The Allegany County Commissioners approved the Baltimore Street Construction Impact Grant program at Thursday’s meeting. A pool of $100,000 – money coming equally from the County and City of Cumberland – is available for qualifying businesses in the downtown construction district. Grantees must have businesses that front on the construction area, employ less than 15 full-time employees and have been in business in their current location since before October 1, 2022. BENCH WARRANT SERVED
On Thursday, February 8, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Robert Pomeroy. The warrant was issued as the result of Pomeroy violating probation. He was originally charged with two counts of School: Fail Send Child. Pomeroy was arrested and transported to Central Booking. Three Challengers File for Local Offices
There are two new candidates for the Allegany County Board of Education and one new candidate for Cumberland City Council. Joining the May 14 primary election for Board of Ed are Max Green and Gerry LaFemina. Incumbents Tammy Fraley and Crystal Bender had already registered. For city council, Brian Lepley is now running, along with incumbents Laurie Marchini and Eugene Frazier. Friday is the deadline to file for city council and Board of Ed.
Williams Street Fire Being Investigated
The Maryland State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of a house fire at a vacant property on Williams Street late Thursday morning. Cumberland firefighters responded to the fire in a vacant two-story residence neat the intersection of Williams Street and Maryland Avenue. Initial investigation has revealed that there were two points of origin for the fire. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for heat exhaustion and dehydration. Year Of Indulgence In Travel
Triple-A is reporting that indulgence is the new trend in vacation planning. Travelers spent 35% more on a trip in 2023 than the previous year, and stayed longer. The average trip booked through AAA in 2023 was $5000 and lasted nine days. Also noted was an increase in passport photos, international driving permits, and using TSA pre-check programs at airports. Americans leave over 600 million vacation days unused every year.
Justice Facing Sale of Lands Around Resort
Governor Jim Justice is facing an auction of lands around his Greenbrier resort to satisfy a multi-million dollar debt. The Greenbrier Sporting Club is a collection of private housing lots surrounding the historic resort in White Sulphur Springs. Carter Bank and Trust is looking to collect $300 million in outstanding debt from the Governor and his family companies. The Justice family tried to avoid the judgements on the properties by claiming unfair business practices by the bank but a Martinsville judge dismissed the case. An auction is planned on the courthouse steps in Greenbrier County March 5th.
State Police Seek Help To Find Missing Woman
Maryland State Police are asking for the public’s assistance in helping locate a missing woman in Queen Anne’s County. Laura Shallue, 54, of Stevensville, Maryland was reported missing on Feb. 6 and was last known to be driving across the westbound span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on Monday, Feb. 5 around 8:30 p.m. She was driving a silver 2007 Nissan Altima, Maryland registration, 6CC1702. Change in Traffic Pattern Starts Monday in Cumberland
City of Cumberland will change the traffic pattern for in the area of South Centre Street and Baltimore Street. Parking that has been on Baltimore Street in front of M&M Bake Shop, Baltimore Street Grill, Wheelz Up, will shift to the other side of the street and start in front of Allegany Pawn going towards George Street with six, 2 hour parking spaces. Vehicles will be able to travel down South Centre Street from Pershing and then will have to turn right onto Baltimore Street. From there, vehicles can drive all the way up to George Street.
