Mini-Grants Awarded to Museums
The Canal Place Preservation Authority recently approved two mini grants to local non-profits. The Allegany Museum was granted $3,350 to develop architectural drawings for a new Mountain Traditions Exhibit. The Frostburg Museum received a grant of $1,429 to purchase new decals for the museum windows. The grant monies come through the Passages of the Western Potomac Heritage Area.
Lakemont Won’t Operate Rides This Season
Lakemont Park in Altoona will not operate their amusement rides this coming season, according to park officials. Citing lower attendance, high maintenance costs, and other financial challenges, officials said it was a difficult decision to make. Open since 1894, Lakemont is home to Leap-The-Dips, the oldest operating wooden rollercoaster in the world. The park will still maintain batting cages, basketball and volleyball courts, mini-golf, and picnic pavilions.
CTE Month Recognized At Allegany College
Career and Technical Education Month is being recognized throughout February. Blue Ridge Outdoors Recognizes Local Businesses
Allegany County Tourism is celebrating the inclusion of eleven businesses, attractions, and experiences that took awards in Blue Ridge Outdoors’ “Best of Awards”. The February issue of the magazine asked for nominations in different categories starting back in October, according to County Tourism Director Ashli Workman. Over 200,000 votes came in, and downtown business Wheelzup Adventures earned a first place finish in one category… Runners-up in other categories included Charis Winery, the 3M Bike Challenge, Tracks and Yaks, and Locust Post Disc Golf. Columbia Street Assault Arrest
On Sunday, February 4, 2024 at approximately 8:27 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 100 block of Columbia Street for a disturbance. The caller reported that there was a male subject with a machete. When police arrived, they observed Elias Harr in a verbal altercation with two other subjects. One of the other subjects kicked the machete into the street and advised officers that he got the machete from Harr. Police collected the machete and interviewed the involved parties. OBSTRUCTING & HINDERING ARREST
On Sunday, February 4, 2024 at approximately 5:55 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the first block of W. First Street for a disturbance. Police contacted the female causing the disturbance and identified her as Dawn Fishel. Fishel was disturbing the peace of others and provided a false name to officers. She was arrested and transported to Central Booking. Fishel was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and posted a $1,000 unsecured personal bond. BENCH WARRANTS SERVED
On Sunday, February 4, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served two bench warrants on Jules Schwarz Jr. The warrants were issued as the result of Schwarz failing to comply with orders of the court. He has original charges of Driving without a license, Disorderly Conduct, and three counts of Assault-2nd Degree. Schwarz was arrested and transported to Central Booking. North Mechanic Street House Fire
Cumberland Fire Department responded to the 300 North Mechanic Street Sunday night just after 9PM. Fire crews reported fire and smoke showing from the multi-family structure. North Mechanic Street was closed at Valley Street as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. There were no reported injuries and the fire was declared out at 9:30PM. Numerous volunteer fire companies assisted city firefighters at the scene or by manning the city's central fire station. Columbia Gas and Potomac Edison also were called to the scene as well as the Cumberland Fire Marshal.
