Bench Warrant Arrest

On Monday, August 21st, 2023, The Cumberland City Police arrested Tyrelle Donte Brown, 26, of Cumberland MD. Brown was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court. The warrant alleges that Brown failed to appear in District Court on August 18th for previous CDS paraphernalia possession charge. He was taken before the District Court Commissioner for his Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held on $1,000 bond. MACO Members Discuss Education Blueprint

The summer conference for the Maryland Association of Counties was held last week in Ocean City.  Allegany County was well represented as all three commissioners and other county officials were in attendance.  One session at the conference saw county representatives voicing frustrations over the Blueprint for Education – an overhaul of the state’s education system that has left counties struggling with finding funds to fulfill the requirements.  Jason Bennett, Allegany County Administrator, sat in on the roundtable and said the members in attendance are unified in wanting to address the general assembly about future funding options for the mandate…

Rabies Vaccines Being Air-Dropped

Rural areas of West Virginia may experience items falling from the sky over the next week as the USDA deploys oral rabies vaccines across the state.  The baits are air-dropped in the more rural parts of the state in an effort to reach the newborns and young of animals in the outskirts of cities.  Hand baiting will also be done in more urban areas.  The baits are about an inch long and should not pose a risk to dogs or cats if they come across them but may cause stomach upset. Malaria Case Confirmed in Maryland

One confirmed case of malaria in the National Capital Region has officials investigating the possible source. The individual that contracted the illness had not been out of the United States or to other states that have reported malaria cases.  The last case in Maryland was reported over 40 years ago.  Malaria is transmitted through mosquito bites and symptoms, as described by Dr. David Blythe of the Maryland Department of Health Infectious Disease Bureau, can take 7 to 30 days to develop… The key to treating the illness is to take precautions against mosquito bites through proper precautions…

Pittsburgh Pirates announced today that pitcher Paul Skenes, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 draft, has been promoted to Altoona. Skenes becomes the fifth player in franchise history to be selected first overall and suit up for the Curve following RHP Kris Benson (1996 / 2002 rehab), RHP Bryan Bullington (2002, 2004 with Curve), RHP Gerrit Cole (2011 / 2012 with Curve) and C Henry Davis (2021 / 2022-23 with Curve). Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and MSP combined resources to target open and active warrants

Jessyca Marie Warden, 35, of Frostburg, was arrested on a District Court Bench Warrant for Failure to Appear. Her original charges include two counts of Fail to Send Child to School. She was released on her own recognizance. Justin Donald Morgan, 35, of Frostburg, was arrested on a Circuit Court Bench Warrant for Violation of Probation. His original charge is 2nd Degree Assault. Ty Johnson signs One Year Deal with Bills

Former University of Maryland and Fort Hill standout running back Ty Johnson has signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills, according to reporting by ESPN.  Johnson was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round of the 2019 draft, but spent the last three seasons with the New York Jets.  The Jets cut Johnson in April after he suffered an injury during an off-season workout.  According to reports, Johnson has been medically cleared to play and may see action in the Bills upcoming preseason game against the Chicago Bears on Saturday.

WVU Students Protest Proposed Cuts

West Virginia University students staged a walkout on Monday to protest the proposed elimination of academic programs as the university seeks to address a $45 million budget shortfall, the Associated Press reported on Monday.  Earlier this year, WVU recommended the elimination of 9% of majors and 7% of total faculty in Morgantown. 

Retired Area Doctor Arrested in Salisbury

A former Cumberland resident is being held without bond in Salisbury, Maryland on an attempted murder charge.  Retired doctor Francis Daniel Jackson was arrested by Maryland State Police and charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and intoxicated endangerment. The charges stem from an incident on August 16th in Salisbury. Court documents indicate Jackson is being held without bond.
