Target of Open and Active Warrants Continues
The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police – Barrack C have combined resources to target open and active warrants. As a result, the following individuals have been apprehended: Demauseous Sian Coleman, 40, of Edgewood, MD was served a Circuit Court Bench Warrant for Failure To Appear. His original charge was Assault – 1st degree. He is currently being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center. Survey for Maryland Historical Trust
The Maryland Historical Trust is seeking feedback to help inform the 2024-2031 update to its statewide preservation plan. By taking a survey, Maryland residents can share opinions on information which will guide historic preservation, archaeology, and cultural heritage activities around the state. The statewide preservation plan is a five-year guidance document for government agencies, non-profit advocates and others involved in historic preservation in Maryland. The survey will close August 31 and can be accessed at mht.maryland.gov/plan.shtml
Greene Street Theft Arrest
On 08/16/2023 at approximately 1:30 AM the Cumberland City Police were dispatched to a business in the 200 block of Greene Street for a theft complaint. Upon arrival officers spoke to an employee who advised Nakota Durham had left the business without paying for an item. Officers contacted Durham who had the item in her possession. Durham was placed under arrest and issued a criminal citation. Durham was released on the citation and is free pending trial in District Court. Arrested – Nakota Cheanta Durham (31) Cumberland, MD Charge – Theft less than $100.00
Warrant Served
On 08/15/2023 the Cumberland City Police served two Arrest Warrants on Sydnei Fluharty. Fluharty had failed to appear in Saint Mary’s County Maryland for a driving without a license charge. Fluharty was contacted on 08/15/2023 by the Cumberland City Police and provided a false name to avoid arrest in that case. The officer was able to positively identify Fluharty and applied for additional charges. Fluharty was located later in the day and arrested without incident. Fluharty was taken to the Allegany County Detention Center for central booking. Fluharty was then seen before a District Court Commissioner and released on her…
911 Ride Comes Through Cumberland Friday
America’s 911 Foundation is gearing up for its 23rd 911 Ride. This year’s ride begins on August 17 with participants traveling to the Flight 93 Memorial outside Somerset, Pennsylvania. Friday morning, riders will depart Somerset and head down Wellersburg Road onto Route 36 before passing through Cumberland sometime between 830 and 915am. Over 450 cyclists and escorts will travel down Mechanic Street before turning on to Frederick Street by the Police and Fire station. City Parking Rates Will Increase Mid-November
In a rare non-unanimous vote, the Cumberland Mayor and City Council voted Tuesday night 3-2 to raise parking rates effective mid-November. Council members Rock Cioni and Lauri Marchini voted against the ordinance, primarily because it would go into effect just as the holiday shopping season is starting and cause the wrong perception with shoppers… Marchini also said that she realizes parking is cumbersome right now, but the retailers in the downtown are worthy of the extra effort…

During the recent visit of Governor Wes Moore and his cabinet to Allegany County, Mayor ray Morriss took the opportunity to bend the ear also of Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller. Morris had spoken previously to the Governor about important projects the city will need state budget money to accomplish, namely the Evitts Creek sewer line project and the upcoming work that will be needed at Mechanic and Harrison Streets. 3M Challenge = Steam vs Bike
In 1830, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s first steam engine raced a horse-drawn rail car to see which was fastest. Now in 2023, cyclists will have that same chance with a race against the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s Steam Engine 1309.
