Warrant Arrest

Victor Wayne Safchuck Jr, 47 of Cumberland, was served a Circuit Court Bench Warrant for Violation Of Probation for Termination of Treatment. His original conviction is for: CDS: Possession-Not Cannabis and CDS: Possession with intent to Distribute: Narcotics where he was received a 3-year and 7-year consecutive sentence with all time suspended. He is currently being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center pending a bail review in Circuit Court.

Gender Care Now Covered Under Medicaid

Maryland’s Department of Health has announced that gender-affirming care is now covered under the Maryland Medicaid program.  The Trans Health Equity Act was passed in 2023 and requires Medicaid to cover gender-affirming care, ensuring equitable health care access for individuals who are transgender and gender diverse.  Newly covered services include hormone therapy, voice surgery, hair removal and transplants, and gender affirming surgery as well as reversal of prior procedures.

Record Number of Candidates Register in WV Ahead of Election

A record number of candidates have formally announced their candidacies for public office, according to WV Secretary of State Mac Warner.  Warner reported that 132 candidates filed Certificates of Announcement with his office on Monday, January 8, the first day of filing for eligible West Virginia candidates to be placed on the ballot for the May 14 Primary Election. That number does not include candidates for county offices who must file their Certificates locally.

Power Outage Reported Near Ellerslie

First Energy is reporting a power outage near Ellerslie along State Route 35 due to the inclement weather.  Approximately 100-500 customers are affected.  Crews are awaiting dispatch to the area.

School Updates for Wednesday

Garrett County Public School Closed, Allegany County Public Schools Closed, Bishop Walsh Closed. Calvary Christian Academy, and LIghthouse Christian Academy all have three hour delays Wednesday. Mineral and Hampshire County Schools will have a 2 hour delay Wednesday. Frostburg State University will have a delayed opening from the beginning of the day shift until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024. Classes and activities will resume, and all non-essential personnel should report to work at that time. Essential personnel should report to work as scheduled. 

Park Street Theft and CDS Arrest

On Tuesday, January 9th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police responded to a business in the 400 block of Park St for the report of a theft. Upon arrival, officers learned that a male subject had entered the store and removed items without attempting to pay them. Officers obtained a description of the male and searched the nearby area. Officers were able to locate a male matching the suspect description and found him to be in possession of the stolen items. West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected in Maryland, Extreme Western Allegany and Central and Eastern Allegany Counties. Pulaski Street Assault Arrest

On Tuesday, January 9th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police responded to a residence in the 300 block of Pulaski St for the report of an assault. Once on scene, officers contacted the alleged victim of the assault. The victim advised that they had been arguing with the male suspect inside the home. It was then alleged that the suspect threw the victim into some furniture, causing visible signs of injury. As a result, Kevin William Page Sr, 59, was placed under arrest. Virginia Ave Assault Arrest

On Tuesday, January 9th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police responded to a residence in the 700 block of Virginia Ave for the report of an assault. Once on scene, officers contacted the parties involved. It was learned that an argument arose between the two parties regarding the usage of a vape pen. The argument then escalated and turned physical. During the altercation, the victim was physically attacked, leaving signs of physical injury. Bench Warrant Served

On Tuesday, January 9th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Kordell Trebor Stewart, 23, of Cumberland MD. Stewart was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on November 28th, 2023. The warrant alleges Stewart failed to appear in District Court on that date for previous charges that include destruction of property, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace.
