On January 6th, Officers from the Cumberland Police Department (CPD) served an Arrest Warrant on James Lucas Wariner. The warrant stems from several incidents to where James Lucas Wariner made threats to do harm to persons and property at a business on Howard Street. Officers conducted an investigation and warrant was issued through District Court. James Lucas Wariner was taken to Allegany County Detention Center to await his hearing. Frostburg State Men's Wrestling team took on a pair of nationally ranked squads in the Mountain Cat Duals on Saturday, falling in each match. In the first matchup against the 11th-ranked hosts, junior Thierno Diallo got FSU out to a strong start at 133 lbs with a pinfall two minutes into the first round, tying the match 6-6 after an opening forfeit win for UPJ. Gov. Justice honors 18th anniversary of Sago Mine disaster
On Jan. 2, 2006, 13 miners became trapped at the Sago Mine, near Buckhannon in Upshur County. A methane explosion trapped the men, and after two days of hope, only one emerged alive. Federal hearings took place later that year in Buckhannon. The mine’s operator, International Coal Group, blamed a lightning strike for the methane explosion. The respirators the miners were provided to help them breathe were not working properly. At least nine coal miners were killed on the job nationwide in 2023, and Chris Williamson, assistant secretary for Mine Safety and Health, says that number can be improved. “We…
Snow, Ice and Sleet Cleanup Continues into the Evening
Snow removal and cleanup efforts continue into the evening hours. During the height of the storm 343 snow plows were dispatched by the Maryland Department of Transportation across the state of Maryland. In Allegany County 26 snow plows were active clearing roads. Maryland State Police responding to a number of disabled vehicles and tractor trailers caught in the storm. Several car drivers unprepared for the wintry mix stranded along roadsides out of fuel. Snow Plows out in force
Snow plows are out in force today clearing streets and making the roadways safe for travelers. WCBC news spoke with Charley Gischlar with MDOT about what motorist should do to be safe on the roads today… First and foremost stay home, ride out the storm and allow road crews to treat and remove snow. The longer the crews are stuck in traffic less efficient the operation is… Stay behind the snow plows, they've removed the snow and treated the road in front of you and provide additional distance between vehicles 3 to 4 car lengths in case you have to stop immediately……
MDOT Prepared for Winter Storm
Maryland Department of Transportation will be out this morning getting roadways prepared for the winter storm. The department has been monitoring the arrival of the storm for 3 days now and has dispatched crews early this morning to treat roadways. WCBC spoke with Charley Gischlar of MDOT… pretreating solutions will be applied to prohibit snow bonding to roadways in Washington and Allegany counties. Garrett County presently has treatments on the road from earlier snowfall in the week.

Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, except 1 to 3 inches over the lower elevations of the central Shenandoah Valley. Ice accumulations of one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch, with the highest potential for ice over the central Shenandoah Valley and northern Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. Liberty Street Closed again this weekend
Liberty Street will be closed to through traffic throughout the weekend. This Closure begins at Bedford Street and will extend to Pershing Street. The closure is in response to the upcoming Winter Storm, and the ongoing utility work in the Liberty Street Corridor.
