On January 5th, Officers form the Cumberland Police Department (CPD) were called to a business on Queen City Drive for a subject shoplifting inside the store. Upon arrival, Officers conducted an investigation and placed Tammy Marie Bartee under arrest. She was written one Maryland Criminal Citation and released from the scene. State Fire Marshals Investigate Fatal Fire
The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division continue to investigate a fast-moving Washington County fire that killed a child and sent two others to hospitals Friday evening. The Smithburg Community Volunteer Fire Company and surrounding departments, including Frederick County Fire & Rescue and Franklin County, Pennsylvania firefighters, responded at 6:20 p.m. to a reported dwelling fire in the 20600 block of Military Road in Cascade. Liberty Street Will Be Closed Through Weekend
The City of Cumberland Street Maintenance Division would like to notify the public that Liberty Street Will be closed to through traffic on Saturday, January 6th 2024, Beginning at 10:00AM and remain so throughout the weekend. This Closure begins at Bedford Street and will extend to Pershing Street. The closure is in response to the upcoming Winter Storm, and the ongoing utility work in the Liberty Street Corridor. North Centre Street Open Over Weekend, Closed Monday Morning
N. Centre Street will be open this weekend. A temporary closure, in the same location, will occur on Monday, January 8th from 6 AM to 10 AM, in order to complete the work. This will include the temporary water service outage during this timeframe on Monday.
January Is National Radon Action Month
While people like to stay inside during the cold winter months, it is important to stay safe. January is National Radon Action Month and the American Lung Association in Maryland is urging everyone to test their home for levels of the dangerous gas. In Maryland, about 21% of radon tests show levels above the EPA action level. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and Kevin Stewart, Director of Environmental Health for the Lung Association, says Radon exposure is not immediately evident…
Barnes Drops Out of Congressional Race
One Republican has dropped out of the race to represent Maryland’s 6th Congressional District. Heath Barnes, the current Burgess (or Mayor) of Woodsboro suspended his campaign earlier this week. Instead, Barnes is endorsing Brenda Thiam, a former state delegate from Hagerstown, for the seat currently held by Representative David Trone, who is running for U.S. Senate instead of reelection. The race for Trone’s seat now includes five Republicans and ten Democrats. Republican Neil Parrot has not yet made a decision to run for the office.
First-Day Hikes Attract Thousands
Over 4,000 people hiked almost 11,000 miles during First Day Hikes in 40 different Maryland state parks on New Year’s weekend, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Between Dec. 31, and Jan. 1, park rangers led 47 scheduled hikes and other programs with additional self-guided opportunities available on state public lands across Maryland. In true Maryland fashion, the weather across the state was highly variable – some parts of the state enjoyed a sunny New Year’s Day morning, while other parts of the state rang in the New Year with snow on the ground.
