Comcast Xfinity Victim of Hackers
Xfinity cable customers are being urged to update their passwords and check in with the major credit bureaus to freeze release of their information after a security breach in mid-October. Hackers gained access to personal information for over 36 million Comcast customers. So far, Comcast has said they are not aware of any customer information being leaked and have their cyber security team monitoring systems 24-7.
New Tenant Announced for Rosenbaum Building
Another new business will soon be locating in downtown Cumberland. Developers of the Rosenbaum building on Baltimore Street said that “Lefty’s Place,” a Detroit-style pizza and wing bar, will be adding a location in Cumberland. The restaurant currently has locations in Morgantown and Charleston, West Virginia and is owned and managed by area native Amel Morris. An opening date has not yet been announced.
JFK Apartments Will Get Facelift
The Board of Public Works recently approved funding for several Western Maryland projects, including a request from The Department Of Housing And Community Development for approval of a $2.8 million dollar loan to JFK Apartments to assist in the rehabilitation of the 100-unit rental community on North Mechanic Street. The project will offer a mix of affordable studio and one-bedroom floorplans targeting low-income households earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income.
Arlington Statue Removal Sign of Worse To Come
A statue erected in 1914 designed to honor Confederate soldiers in the Civil War and promote reconciliation between North and South has been removed from its place in Arlington National Cemetery. Local Historian Ed Taylor, Jr says it is a sign of things to come for all monuments and headstones… The statue that was removed is being relocated to the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park in Virginia. Assault Arrest
On December 26, 2023, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department were notified that a male subject threatened a female with a knife. The suspect was later identified as James Robert Michael Langway. Mr. Langway told the female that he was going to kill with the large knife he was brandishing. The victim’s husband observed the incident and ran to his truck and retrieved a baseball bat. Mr. Langway then ran from the scene but was quickly apprehended by Officers from the Cumberland Police Department. Officers located the large knife on Langway’s jacket pocket. He was subsequently transported to Police Headquarters….
Arrest Warrants Served
On December 26, 2023, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on Carla Jean Redinger. The Arrest Warrant stemmed from an incident on May 19, 2021. Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a City View Terrance for a report of an assault. Officers arrived on scene and learned the suspect, later identified as Redinger, came to another family’s property and began complaining about their child playing. PA State Police Busy Over Holidays
In an ongoing effort to keep Pennsylvanians safe and informed, the Pennsylvania State Police released their annual Christmas holiday crash and enforcement report today, which included 198 arrests of people who drove under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Over the three-day period (Dec. 23-25), PSP investigated 404 crashes, where three individuals died, and 70 others were injured. Alcohol was a factor in 36 crashes. Troopers also issued: 1,036 speeding citations. 123 citations for failing to wear a seat belt. 22 citations for not securing children in safety seats.
WV Attorney General Representative To Visit Eastern Panhandle

Allegany County Schools Have New HR Supervisor
Allegany County Public Schools’ Superintendent, Mr. Jeffrey Blank, has announced the appointment of the new Supervisor of Human Resources. Mr. Christopher Cassell will assume this role effective January 1, 2024. Mr. Cassell has been an employee of Allegany County Public Schools for over 25 years. Over the years, he has held several positions within the system. He has been a science teacher and Assistant Principal at both Washington Middle School and Fort Hill High School.
