Naming Opportunities Open For Downtown Benches, Waterfall

Cumberland residents and businesses can now apply to the city to name one of the 17 benches on Baltimore Street or the waterfall at Liberty Street. The naming process is on a first-come, first-served basis. Proceeds will be used to maintain Baltimore Street. Those interested in naming or dedicating can apply through cumberlandmd.gov. Naming rights for the waterfall can be 5 or 10 years according to Mayor Ray Morriss…     “For the waterfall, it’s $5,000 for five years, $10,000 for 10; and also the benches are $1,000 dollars for the life of the bench which is probably 10 years.”

Obituary For Adrienne Ottaviani

Adrienne L. Ottaviani, 78, was called to be with her Lord and Savior at on Tuesday, September 23. She passed after a long battle with cancer at home with her family at her side. She was born in Denbo, Pennsylvania, on July 7, 1947, to Francisco Saverio Voso and Ruth Ann (Trocano) Voso. The Voso family later moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she met her husband, Philip. Patchy Dense Fog this Morning

National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement for Patchy Dense Fog. The combination of light winds and lingering low level moisture will create areas of fog through daybreak this morning. Visibilities can become less than a quarter of a mile at times in the thickest of fog. Please use caution if traveling early this morning.

Cumberland Fire Department dispatch to a house fire just before 1 a.m. near Virginia Avenue and Elder Street. Fire fighters remained on scene till just after 3:45 a.m. No report of any serious injuries. The Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

House Republicans Respond to Energy Bill Credits

Maryland House Republicans issued a response to Governor Moore’s plans for energy rebates on utility bills. House Minority Leader Jason Buckel said there was nothing at all new in the announcement with Democrats placing the blame on energy companies and PJM. The $80 rebate will do little to offset the hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars Maryland’s families pay in high energy bills. House Minority Whip Jesse Pippy said what is unfair is having Marylanders pay for the Democrats failed green energy policies.

Moore Announces Appointments For Judicial Nominating Commission

Maryland Governor Wes Moore has announced appointments to the District 5 Trial Courts Judicial Nominating Commission that covers Allegany and Garrett Counties. The commission’s role is to advertise judicial vacancies, seek candidates and evaluate applicants for open positions. Those appointed include local attorneys Christopher Logsdon, Donald Goldbloom, Matt Gilmore, Jayci Duncan, and Elizabeth Lamm. Other appointees include were Mary Jane O’Rourke, Joan Leatherman, and Victor Rezendez.

Citizen Confronts Council Over Infestation

A Pennsylvania Avenue property is giving neighbors issues that were brought to Cumberland’s Mayor and City Council. Brandon Fisher, a resident next to 211-213 Penn Ave told council the property is infested with cockroaches and other insects and vermin spreading to nearby homes. Maryland’s state property search lists the property owner as Bob Turner of Midland. Animal Control Is Not Using Its Authority

South Cumberland resident Rich Everett told the Allegany County Commissioners of an ongoing dog control issue at the last meeting.  The most recent incident involving dogs running loose ended the life of Everett’s dog on his front porch, but he says Animal Control has done nothing.  Everett said a child could be the dogs’ next victim…     “And if they did that again—if my little niece is in the yard playin’ or on the porch she wouldn’t stand a chance.  It would be over that fast.” Commissioner Bill Atkinson voiced frustration that Animal Control is not doing their job. …

“Wolf of West Virginia” Sentenced to Prison for Wire Fraud

Theodore Miller, 35, of South Charleston, was sentenced today to seven years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $398,533.52 in restitution for two counts of wire fraud. Miller defrauded more than 180 individuals through two real estate investment schemes. According to court documents and statements made in court, Miller conceived and perpetrated the fraudulent schemes between the spring of 2022 and September 2024.  Miller solicited investors on social media, where he portrayed himself as the “Wolf of West Virginia,” a wealthy, successful and knowledgeable real estate mogul with enough disposable income…
