Local Republican Leaders Endorse Moore

The mayors of two of Western Maryland’s most Republican areas have announced support for the re-election of Democratic Governor Wes Moore. Lonaconing Mayor Jack Coburn and Westernport’s Judy Hamilton have both been quoted in a release from the Moore-Miller campaign, throwing their support behind the governor. Quotes from both mayors outline the fact that although they do not always see eye-to-eye, Moore has remembered the small towns of the state rather than just the big cities.

Shutdown Looms – Again

President Trump abruptly canceled a scheduled meeting with Democratic leaders this week seeking a solution to avoid a potential government shutdown. If an agreement is not reached, the federal government could face a shutdown on October 1. Maryland Congressman Johnny Olszewski spoke with WBAL Radio and said Republicans are holding all the cards…     “Republicans are in control. They have the White House, the House, the Senate. I think that if there is a shutdown, there has to be ownership when you have control of all the levers of power. I am concerned about the looming cuts to the…

Majority of School Buildings Past Lifespan

A recent report from the Maryland Comptroller’s office showed that only 20% of public school buildings in the state were rated “like new” while Allegany and Garrett were among five counties with buildings well past their lifespan. State School Superintendent Dr. Carey Wright told reporters the state average indicates a need to prioritize repairs and updates…    “Our average index is at 52% right now, meaning that over half of the useful life of these buildings have been depleted. The reasonable average that we look for across the state is between 32 and 37%, so you can see that it’s…

Animals Seized From South Cumberland Incident

The Allegany County Animal Shelter has seized two dogs that attacked and killed another dog on its porch in South Cumberland.  The dogs were running loose when the incident occurred. Shelter spokesperson Becky McClarran said the dogs had to be tested for rabies but was unsure how the shelter was going about it…     “We do have the two dogs now not only because of that but also because they had not had their rabies shots. So we did seize the animals. We are having them evaluated, have had them evaluated. What we want the most is to have…

Tax Changes Can Benefit New Car Owners

A change in tax laws could benefit new car owners, but there are strings attached. The Car Loan Interest Deduction is a tax change where interest up to $10,000 per year on new cars may be deducted.  Joe Mullenax recently joined WCBC to go over some of the details on the deduction…     “It has to be a new car that has never been purchased by anyone else, so you can’t go and get one of those great deals – oh, this car has only 3,000 miles so it’s almost new. No, it has to be brand new. And,…

Senator Mike McKay along with others from Maryland were part of the delegation that visited several sites, including the Supernova festival location connected to the war with Hamas…     “Really, really got a perspective on Israel, a perspective on the war that was started by Hamas.
