Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration Wins Awards
The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration has been recognized by three national organizations as an elite government agency delivering premier customer service. The administration received awards for customer service, communications and its e-Services customer portal at the 2023 American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators’ International Conference. The Motor Vehicle Administration accepted an International Service Award, International and Regional Communications Award and an award for Fraud Prevention and Detection.
BENCH WARRANT SERVED
On November 1st, 2023 the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Ashley Marie Silvious. The warrant was issued as result of Silvious violating conditions of probation. She was originally charged with theft less than $100.00. Silvious was placed under arrest and transported to central booking. Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Arrest for Wednesday
The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police – Barrack C have combined resources to target open and active warrants. As a result, the following individuals have been apprehended. Wednesday, November 1, 2023, David Diarus Daughton, 24 of Cumberland, was served two Circuit Court Bench Warrants for Violation of Probation. In the first case, his original conviction from 2019 was for Conspiracy-Armed Robbery where he was sentenced to 20 years with 15 years suspended and Supervised Probation for 5 years. Longtime Basketball Coach Rick Harris Dies
Richard Joseph (Rick) Harris, 87, passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, surrounded by his family following a short stay at Sterling Care at Frostburg Village. Rick was born in Frostburg on February 27, 1936. He was the son of the late Henry and Margaret (Maley) Harris. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Kenny Harris, his sister Margie Cline and his granddaughter, Mya Harris. The Chesapeake Bay Program now shows that 9.1 million acres of land in the Chesapeake Bay watershed are permanently protected from development. Protected lands include those with historical, ecological, and agricultural value. Maryland currently has 1.7 million acres protected within its boundaries. Liberty Street Closures Scheduled
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Triton Construction, would like to notify the public that demolition and utility work in conjunction with the downtown mall project is set to begin on Liberty Street on Thursday, November 2nd. Drought Assistance Available in Washington County
The Washington County Department of Economic and Business Development announced that Maryland Governor Wes Moore, in conjunction with USDA Secretary of Agriculture, Thomas Vilsack, have officially declared that Washington County, MD qualifies for Drought Disaster Relief. Washington County, MD has not received adequate rainfall for the last 8 or more consecutive weeks making Washington County farm operators eligible for certain assistance from the Farm Service Agency. Affected farmers can contact the Washington County Farm Service Agency in Hagerstown.
Union Street Residential Fire
Cumberland Fire Department dispatch this morning to Union Street for a residential fire. Fire fghters quickly dousing that basement fire. No report of any serious injuries. The Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
Trespassing Arrest
On October 31, 2023, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department observed Scott Eugene MacElwee walk past a large “No Trespassing” sign and then across the train tracks, belonging to CSX. Officers contacted MacElwee and issued him a Criminal Citation for trespassing. MacElwee was then released pending his trial at District Court. Arrest: Scott Eugene MacElwee, age 54, Frostburg Maryland. Charge: Trespassing on Posted Property.
Criminal Citation Issued
On October 31, 2023, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department issued a criminal citation to James Edgeworth. Officers were dispatched to Martins Market for a report theft. The officers spoke with the stores theft prevention member who provided the details. Mr. Edgeworth admitted to removing the items without paying. Mr. Edgeworth was issued a criminal citation and released pending his trial at District Court. Arrest: James Edgeworth, age 72, Cumberland Maryland. Charges: Theft less than $100.00.
