Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) is partnering with Johns Hopkins University and Medicine, Alliance of Black Women Attorneys, Out For Justice, and Maryland Volunteer Legal Services to host a FREE Expungement Clinic on Sunday, November 5, 2023. Individuals with a criminal history will have an opportunity to be advised by legal professionals and have petitions prepared on site. This includes people with cannabis-related charges who may be newly eligible for expungement. This one-on-one expungement assistance can be life-changing for the vast number of people who qualify.
Baltimore Street Bridge Closed October 30-31
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Carl Belt Inc., would like to notify the public that the Baltimore Street Bridge will be closed to thru traffic on Monday, October 30th, at 6am through Tuesday, October 31st, at 3pm. The bridge will be reopened to one-way traffic flowing from Mechanic Street to Greene Street. The bridge is expected to be reopened to two-way traffic in June 2024. A detour will be in place to direct vehicles around the site, during the temporary closing. Cumberland Police Release on Saturday’s Shooting
On October 28, 2023, at 1:40 am the Cumberland Police Department received a report of a shooting in an alley in the Mechanic Street area. Upon arrival, officers discovered a chaotic scene with one 17-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers began providing medical aid along with the Cumberland Fire Department; however, the victim later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Responding CPD officers along with Deputies from the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Troopers from the Maryland State Police and Detectives from The Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit began conducting the investigation. 17 year old Juvenile Fatally shot in Cumberland Shooting Saturday
A number of gunshots ring out just after 1:30AM on South Mechanic Street and Merchants Alley Saturday morning. Officers of Cumberland Police Department responding within seconds to the incident as a drunk and panic crowd hampered efforts to secure the scene. Officers found four individuals with gunshot wounds in the alley between Uncle Jack's and Niners. Allegany County Sheriff deputies assisting with crowd control and securing the scene to allow Cumberland Fire Department to treat and transport one male trauma patient, unconscious and receiving CPR. Industrial Blvd for a Disturbance
On October 27th, 2023 at approximately 23:22 p.m, the Cumberland Police Department responded to Industrial Blvd for a disturbance. Upon arrival an officer was informed that Leonard Wayne Metzner had returned to an address he had previously been advised not to go to, and created a disturbance. Metzner was located nearby and placed under arrest. He was transported to Central Booking and is currently awaiting a bond hearing.
