Arch Street disturbance Leads to Firearm Arrest

On Friday, October 13, 2023 at approximately 8:23 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the first block of Arch Street for a disturbance, possibly involving a firearm.  Police arrived and contacted an alleged victim who reported that Sean Smith pointed a rifle at her.  Firearms were located in the residence and seized.  Officers discovered that one of the firearms was reported as stolen.  After further investigation, Smith was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters.  Police learned that Smith was prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition.  Additional information was obtained about a possible…

BENCH WARRANT SERVED

On Friday, October 13, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Jacob Kasecamp.  The warrant was issued as the result of Kasecamp violating the conditions of his probation.  He was originally charged with Possess/Issue Forged Currency and CDS: Possess-Not Cannabis.  Kasecamp was placed under arrest.  He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center on a $500 bond. Grand Avenue Assault Arrest

On Friday, October 13, 2023 at approximately 11:28 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Grand Avenue and E. Third Street for a possible assault taking place inside of a vehicle.  Upon police arrival, a male subject exited the vehicle and began to walk away.  Officers contacted the male and identified him as Benjamin Reimer.  Reimer reported that he had been arguing with the female inside the vehicle.  Police contacted the female who reported that she had been assaulted by Reimer.  Officers observed the female to have injuries consistent with her statement.  Reimer was placed…

ASSAULT ARREST & BENCH WARRANTS SERVED

On Friday, October 13, 2023 at approximately 9:47 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 500 block of N. Centre Street for an assault in progress.  Police arrived on scene and contacted the alleged victim who reported that she had been assaulted by Joseph Wood.  The victim had sustained injuries.  Officers also confirmed that Wood had three active bench warrants for his arrest.  The warrants had been issued as the result of Wood failing to appear in court on October 5, 2023.  Wood was originally charged with Disorderly Conduct, Disturb Peace/Hinder Passage, and Intoxicated…

I-68 Eastbound Detour Starts Tuesday

Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will continue a resurfacing project on eastbound I-68 in  Allegany County beginning Monday, October 16.  Crews will close and detour eastbound I-68 between exit 52 MD 144 (National Pike) to exit 56 Flintstone / MD 144 (National Pike). The detour will be in place because the depth of excavation is too deep for adjacent motorists to pass by safely. Ring of Fire Eclipse

The rare “ring of fire” eclipse that occurs on Saturday may not give quite the show to  Maryland  as to other parts of the country.  The annular eclipse will happen Saturday, starting just after 12:30pm and last till around 2:40pm.  The peak of the eclipse will occur at about 1:18pm.  The annular eclipse occurs when the moon lines up between earth and the sun, leaving only a rim of light visible – the “ring of fire.”  NASA experts say the best view will be in the southwestern US, with  Maryland  only seeing a partial eclipse of about 30%.  The next big sky…

Increased Water and Sewer Rates for nty

The Allegany County Board of Commissioners approved recommended changes to the county’s water and sewer rates during its regular public meeting on May 25th. The first set of bills reflecting the 10.4% increase is being sent out this week. With the increased rates, customers will average an increase of approximately $24 quarterly.  Public Works director Adam Patterson explained that while the county’s water account is $710,000 in the positive, the sewer account is running $1.5million in the negative.  The goal is to get the two pillars of water and sewer to stand on their own.

New Guidelines for Screening Breast Cancer

Dr. Blanche Mavromatis, Oncologist with UPMC Western Maryland, spoke recently on WCBC about the importance of screening for breast cancer in women.  She said new guidelines have been instituted that screenings should be now be started at age 40 instead of 50 and be done every other year unless there are health concerns that would warrant yearly exams.  High risk women or those with dense breast tissue can also access additional testing if needed.
