C&O Canal offices could move to Williamsport

November 19th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

The Herald Mail reports that although officials have been reluctant to share details, it is no secret that there is an effort under way to try to relocate the National Park Service headquarters for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park to Williamsport. It has been discussed during recent Williamsport Town Council meetings and was mentioned by Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill during a Cabinet meeting in Hagerstown in October. And now new details about the plan emerged Tuesday in an information packet presented by the Washington County Community Lobbying Coalition at a Hagerstown City Council meeting. A 40,000-square-foot building would cost roughly $20 million to build in the small canal town, where another major project, including work to restore and rewater the Conococheague Aqueduct, is already under way, according to the coalition's eight-page handout.
