One of the hot button issues facing the city of Cumberland in recent years has been the controversial Maryland Avenue Redevelopment- commonly referred to as the Rolling Mill projects. Houses and properties in that section of town have been purchased to make way for commercial development- but not all of the home owners have been interested in selling. During WCBC’s candidates forum featuring those running for mayor- they were asked if they supported the project- and would they use eminent domain if necessary. Incumbent Mayor Brian Grim says has been a strong supporter of the project and doesn’t anticipate the need to force residents out of their homes…
Candidate Ray Morriss called it a a good project, that was poorly handled from the start…
Candidate Robin Hood Constitution concurred that implementation of the plan was sloppy- and has placed the project in jeopardy…
Other candidates participating were David Smith, George Merling and Raymond Dye. Candidate Lawrence Becker was unable to take part due to a family emergency.
