Md’s School Board Proposing Changes To Suspension Policies

March 1st, 2012 by WCBC Radio

WBAL reports that Maryland's school board is proposing that officials only be allowed to suspend students for more than 10 days if they believe that is the sole way to keep the school safe. A draft proposal released this week by the state school board is part of Maryland's effort to cut the number of days students are suspended for nonviolent offenses.  The board also proposes eliminating the disproportionate number of suspensions for minorities and special education students. In a report that outlines changes that would move away from zero-tolerance policies, the board says it aims to keep students in school as much as possible and require educational support for those who are removed.
