MSP Arrests Pennsylvania Man in Baltimore Carjacking Case

December 23rd, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Maryland State Police have charged a Pennsylvania man in connection with a series of carjackings and vehicle crashes last week along Interstate 83 in Baltimore County and Baltimore City.

Shawn Johnson, 28, of Glen Rock, Pennsylvania is charged with two counts each of carjacking, motor vehicle theft, theft under $25,000 and unauthorized removal of a motor vehicle. He is being held without bail. He will be transported to the Baltimore County Detention Center after being treated for injuries at the hospital.

According to a preliminary investigation, at about 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 19, the driver of a Honda Civic, later identified as Johnson, was involved in a three-vehicle crash at I-83 South in the area of Timonium Road. Investigators said that Johnson, who was an unauthorized user of the car, flagged down a female driving a Lexus before carjacking that vehicle.

Johnson is then believed to have crashed the Lexus at I-83 South at the Jones Falls Expressway before carjacking another female who was driving a Toyota Corolla. According to a preliminary investigation, Johnson then crashed the Toyota at I-83 South at Northern Parkway. He attempted to carjack a third female’s vehicle but was stopped by a good Samaritan, investigators said.

Johnson is believed to have tried to steal the good Samaritan’s vehicle. However, that driver was able to pull Johnson out of the vehicle before he could drive away. Johnson was apprehended at the scene by a Baltimore City sheriff’s deputy, who turned him over to the state police. Johnson was transported to Sinai Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

One victim, a passenger in the other vehicle of the initial crash, was injured as a result of this incident. There was no one else in the vehicle with the suspect at the time of any of the crashes. Maryland State Police were not involved in a pursuit with the suspect. The off-ramp from I-83 South to Northern Parkway, the site of the final crash, was the only road closure as a result of the incident.

The case remains under investigation.
