West Virginia Confining Youth at Disproportionately High Rate
West Virginia has about 400 youth confined at any given time, vastly out of step with states with similar population sizes, according to a new report by the Prison Policy Initiative. Wanda Bertram with the initiative explains these numbers are up because kids across the state are locked up for status offenses, such as underage drinking… “Behavioral violations that are not law violations for adults, things like running away, truancy from school, incorrigibility, which means repeatedly disobeying your parents—again, not crimes. Confinement is both traumatizing for kids and extremely disruptive to things like education.”
Washington Street Library Sets Heritage Days Program
The Washington Street Library will be open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, September 13th to participate in Cumberland’s Heritage Day festivities. MD Casinos Down Year-Over-Year For August
Maryland’s six casinos combined to generate over $170 million dollars in revenue from slot machines and table games in August of 2025. The total was down 2.1% compared to the same month last year. The state received $72.7 million in tax revenue from the casinos for August. MGM National Harbor continues to be the large taker in revenue, bringing in $70 million in August. Allegany County’s Rocky Gap Casino generated just under $5 million from its 630 slot machines and 12 table games for August.

The inauguration ceremony for David Jones as President of Allegany College of Maryland will include a number of local and regional speakers for today’s program. Heritage Days Traffic Pattern Changes
The Annual Heritage Days Festival will take place this weekend, beginning Saturday, September 13th, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and continuing on Sunday, September 14th, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Due to the large number of attendees expected, temporary traffic pattern changes will be implemented to ensure public safety and minimize delays. Criminal Summons Service
On Wednesday, September 10th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a Criminal Summons on Sylvie Blue Carder, 31, of Cumberland MD. The summons was in reference to an incident that occurred on August 27th, 2025, at a residence in the 600 block of E. First St. During that incident, it is alleged that Carder was neglectful in her personal care of a minor of which she was responsible for. Bench Warrant Arrest
On Wednesday, September 10th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Chantee Marie Carey, 36, of Cumberland MD. Carey was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on August 26th, 2025. The warrant alleged Carey violated the terms and conditions of probation that had been placed upon her due to a previous conviction on a charge of 2nd degree assault. She was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance, where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. She is currently being held without bond.
