Criminal Summons Service

On November 14th, 2022, the Cumberland City Police served a criminal summons on Jerry Lee Hemming, 45, of Cumberland MD. The summons was in reference to an incident that occurred on October 26th, 2022, at a residence in the 400 block of Columbia St. During the incident, it was alleged that Hemming assaulted a victim after a verbal argument escalated inside the home. As a result, a criminal summons was issued. Hemming was served the summons and released, pending trial in District Court. Arrested: Jerry Lee Hemming            Age: 45 Charges: Assault 2nd Degree  

Criticism over Sheriff Craig Robertson 45 day retirement

While he is expected to be sworn in for a fourth term next month, for the time being Craig Robertson is retired from his position as Allegany County Sheriff. His announcement came via social media in October and revolves around rules of his pension. On his Facebook page, Robertson stated that he was temporarily stepping down from his post, due to his retirement from the Maryland State Pension System. His retirement became effective October 31st ,   just a week before the election. In accordance with the SRPS, by law there must be a 45 day separation period.  He told WCBC…

Construction at the Cumberland Gateway commercial center on Park Street has been making slow, but steady progress this year, with the developer eyeing businesses opening as early as next spring. Man Charged After Setting Fire at Cumberland Union Rescue Mission

A joint investigation between the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Cumberland Fire Marshals Office led to the arrest of a man staying at the Union Rescue Mission Monday.  Keith Wayne Bergdoll, 31, was charged after they determined he was responsible for setting his bunk bed on fire. Investigators learned that Bergdoll set the fire while his roommate was asleep in the top bunk and walked away. He reportedly told investigators he started the fire hoping to make the homeless shelter safer. He was concerned after discovering a smoke alarm was not in his bedroom.  Just before 8:000…

As football team falters, WVU fires AD Shane Lyons

West Virginia announced the firing of athletic director Shane Lyons on Monday, a move that comes amid the worst stretch for the football team in more than four decades. President Gordon Gee said there were no immediate plans to make changes under coach Neal Brown. Lyons is gone after nearly eight years. Gee said in a statement that Rob Alsop, WVU's vice president for strategic initiatives, has been named interim athletic director while a search is ongoing for Lyons' replacement. Maryland, 39 states settle Google location-tracking charges for $392M

Search giant Google has agreed to a $391.5 million settlement with Maryland and 39 other states to resolve an investigation into how the company tracked users’ locations, state attorneys general announced Monday. The states’ investigation was sparked by a 2018 Associated Press story, which found that Google continued to track people’s location data even after they opted out of such tracking by disabling a feature the company called “location history.” The attorneys general called the settlement a historic win for consumers, and the largest multistate settlement in U.S history dealing with privacy.
