Carl Anthony Prather Jr, 22 of Washington DC, was arrested on a Princes George's County Circuit Court Bench Warrant for Failure to Appear that has been active since 6/20/2023. This was his second failure to appear in this case. His original charges include: Firearm Possession with Felony Conviction, Regulated Firearm: Illegal Possession, Loaded Handgun on Person, Handgun on Person, Detach Magazine Over 10 Rounds, Illegal Possession Ammunition. Allegany College of Maryland Employees Honored with League Excellence Awards
Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) proudly announces that three of its employees, Laura Fiscus, Jennifer Light, and Sandra "Sandi" Foreman, were chosen to receive League Excellence Awards from the League for Innovation in the Community College. Cash Valley Threat Non-Credible
School administrators became aware of an alleged threat at Cash Valley Elementary School and conducted an investigation this morning. The threat was determined to be non-credible. There was no disruption to school operations, according to Christian Brooks, Public Information Officer for Allegany County Schools.
Undocumented Immigrants Could Buy Healthcare
Bills have now exchanged legislative chambers in Annapolis that would allow people to buy health insurance through Maryland’s healthcare exchange, regardless of immigration status. The “Access to Care” Act would require a federal waiver since currently undocumented residents are not legally able to purchase federally funded coverage. The American Immigration Council estimates there are 221,000 undocumented immigrants in Maryland.
Lanternfly Quarantine Zone Extended
The Maryland Department of Agriculture has announced the expansion of its spotted lanternfly quarantine zone to include Charles and Garrett counties. This expands the quarantine zone to essentially the entire state with the exception of Somerset, Dorchester, St. Mary’s, and Worcester counties. The spotted lanternfly poses a major threat to the region’s agricultural industries as it feeds on more than 70 different types of crops and plants, including grapes, hops, apples, peaches, oak, and pine.
Bench Warrant Served
On Wednesday, March 13th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Levi Neal Jones, 25, of Cumberland MD. Jones was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County Circuit Court on March 7th. The warrant alleges Jones violated the terms and conditions of his probation that had been placed upon him due to a previous conviction on charges of child neglect. Preserving Washington’s Headquarters
Peggy Keene of the Daughters of the American Revolution addressed the Cumberland City Council in December about leasing land where George Washington’s Headquarters sits on Greene Street to better maintain and preserve the structure – City Administrator Jeff Silka says the park is encumbered and cannot be leased. Maryland Squares Up With Corrections Workers
Governor Moore and his administration closed a dark chapter on Wednesday with the additional payment of over $9 million dollars to 5,000-plus Maryland correctional workers for overtime that was stolen from them. Last summer, $13 million dollars was paid out for workers that had time cards tampered with, rounding down the time they actually worked. AFSCME President Patrick Moran is pleased the money is being paid, but still wants accountability on the scandal…
Sports Betting Picking Up Steam
While casino gambling revenues in the state seem to be slacking off, the sports wagering market continues to grow at a fast pace. For February, players wagered $442.5 million dollars, an increase of 30.4% over 2023’s wagers. Contributions to the state in tax dollars increased 50% over 2023, with $4.2 million going into the state’s coffers. There are 13 retail and 12 mobile sportsbooks in the state that paid out $399 million dollars in winnings in February.
BPW Extends Contract With YesCare
Wednesday’s Maryland Board of Public Works meeting heard opposition raised about the extension of a contract with YesCare that provides medical services for the state’s prison population. Senator Mike McKay attended the meeting, voicing concern that YesCare has not paid health care providers that it subcontracts to locally, owing them thousands of dollars.
