Additional Land Conserved for Antietam
A plot of land along Sharpsburg Pike will now be conserved for future generations as part of the Antietam Battlefield The property was significant to the Battle of Antietam as being the location where General Burnside’s Union forces clashed with General Hill’s Confederate forces. This conservation easement will protect the property in perpetuity and allow the land area to convert back to how it looked at the time of the battle. The easement was purchased in-part with funds from the National Park Service’s Land and Water Conservation Fund, using Washington County as a pass-thru entity for the procurement of the easement.
Resident Calls For Awareness Campaign
A newer resident of the City was at the most recent Cumberland Mayor and City Council meeting where he got to hear about the growing vagrancy situation around the historic George Washington’s Headquarters area. During the meeting, a the Daughters of the American Revolution put forth an option of leasing the land from the city to provide an answer to policing the area. The new resident, Peter Cooper of Washington Street, also spoke to the council with his suggestion for those who witness illegal actions taking place there or elsewhere in the city…
Mineral County Schools and Others in West Virginia Delay Monday Openings
Mineral County Schools have announced there will be a two hour delay Monday, December 11. Hampshire and Grant Counties will have a two hour delay and Hardy County will have a three hour delay.
Hampshire County Senior Citizen Found Dead
William Nyal Gilbert, 88, was found dead near his home Friday. Gilbert, a resident of eastern Hampshire County near the Morgan County Line, had first been reported missing last Tuesday, December 5. He was found near his home and foul play is not suspected.
Browning Street Detour Beginning Monday
Beginning on Monday, December 11, 2023, through Tuesday, December 12, 2023, Browning Street from Oak Street to Virginia Avenue will be patched. The road will be closed during construction to route vehicles around the construction site. Detours will be set up as needed to direct traffic around the site. Parking will be restricted in the areas during construction starting at 6:00am each morning and concluding at 5:00pm. Please use caution in the area, obey flagger directions and follow detour signage. Residents are advised to avoid the area as much as possible during this time to allow for the work to…
Fugitive, Disorderly Conduct and Public Intoxication Arrest
On December 9th a Cumberland Police Officer was patrolling the residential area of Columbia Ave and Pear Street when he observed a sedan with West Virginia registration illegally parked on the corner. The vehicle was parked on a red line and in front of a handicap sidewalk ramp. The Officer initiated contact with the driver concerning the parking infractions. The driver and passenger stated they were lost and chose that area to look for directions. The driver was identified as a Keyser West Virginia resident and the passenger was identified as Destiny Renee Amtower. It was learned that Destiny had warrants…

On December 9th Cumberland Police Officers served a District Court Bench Warrant for failure to appear on Cassandra Kay Porter. Cassandra Kay Porter failed to show for the court appearance on original charges of Fraud per Identity to Avoid Prosecution along with Obstructing and Hindering. Frostburg State Women's Basketball team defeated the Glenville State Pioneers for the first time in program history on Saturday afternoon by a score of 102-98.
