Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police – Barrack C have combined resources to target open and active warrants. As a result, the following individuals have been apprehended Monday, October 30, 2023. Jordon Marshall Shook, 37 of Cumberland, was served five (5) warrants for Failure to Appear and Violation of Probation. He is being held on a $2,500 – 100% bond in the District Court case, and is being held without bond in all other Circuit Court matters pending a bail review. City Seeking Citizens for Commissions & Boards

The City of Cumberland is seeking individuals interested in community service to serve on boards and commissions when openings are available.  Areas where citizens can serve include the Administrative Appeals Board, Downtown Development Commission, Parks and Recreation, Historic Preservation, and Shade Tree Commission.  The City is compiling a list of interested citizens to minimize the time between appointments when there is an opening.  A complete list of boards and commissions is available on the City of Cumberland website.

Wind Turbines At The Beach Raise Concern

Wind turbines could be surrounding Maryland from the mountains to the coast in the near future.  At a public meeting this past week in Ocean City, residents and stakeholders heard from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management about the preliminary impact of planned windfarms off the Maryland and Delaware coast.  Up to 121 wind turbines are planned along the coast, 10-15 miles offshore of Ocean City, the Delaware Bay and the Chesapeake Bay.  Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan spoke with Coast TV and there are concerns for the state’s tourist destination…     

DISORDERLY CONDUCT ARREST

On October 29th, 2023 at approximately 3:22 p.m., the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 300 block of Bedford Street to serve an active warrant. Upon placing the subject under arrest, Dennis Leo Landis Jr. began to create a disturbance and disrupt police from affecting an arrest. Landis was ordered to stop his actions, but continued to yell at officers. Landis was eventually placed under arrest and transported to Central Booking. He was later seen by a District Court commissioner and released on $2,500 unsecured bail. ARREST WARRANT SERVED

On October 30th, 2023 the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Charles Tivis Dearing. The warrant was issued after an investigation into an assault was completed on October 12th, 2023. The officer responded to the 100 block of Springdale Street and contacted a victim, who advised that Dearing had struck them in the face. The officer observed injuries consistent to the victim’s statement and applied for charges at District Court. BENCH WARRANT SERVED

On October 29th, 2023 the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Cassyopia Se-E Starr Schell. The warrant was issued after Schell violated terms of her pre-trial supervision from original charges of rape 2nd degree. Schell was placed under arrest and transported to Central Booking. Some Project Updates to Rolling Mill

Citizens passing by the Cumberland Gateway Project, a-k-a Rolling Mill, may notice that fencing around the property is gone and some landscaping has taken place.  Mayor Ray Morriss says it is part of what developer Kline-Scott-Visco of Frederick has been tasked to do, but the project still isn’t where City officials would like it to be…      The Mayor says a meeting is scheduled with the developer sometime after November 15th and the City hopes to be brought up to speed on why there has been a delay on the plans for the site…     

Morrisey Expects To Win Title IX Appeal

Saying that safeguarding TITLE IX and protecting women’s sports is important, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrissey defended the state’s Save Women’s Sports Act.  Currently, a preliminary injunction exists that allows transgender students to continue participating on girls sport teams until an appeal is heard by the US Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.  Morrissey says the law is constitutional as the Sports Act doesn’t mention transgender status, but uses the marker of biological sex…

Trone Co-Authors Legislation on Plastics Pollution

Congressman David Trone is co-authoring legislation designed to take on the growing plastic pollution crisis. Trone says the Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act takes significant action by holding the plastics industry accountable and reducing the amount of wasteful plastic produced, including reducing and banning certain single-use plastic products that cannot be recycled.  Co-author of the bill, Congressman Jared Huffman, says the Big Oil companies are aggressively promoting more plastics as the use of fossil fuels lessen…
