On October 23rd, 2023 the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Travis Maurice Peck. The summons was issued after an officer conducted an investigation of an assault that occurred on October 21st, 2023 on Baltimore Avenue. The officer then filed for charges at District Court. Maryland’s Department of Health is inviting applicants to a new funding opportunity to support service members and veterans through behavioral health programs. Selected applicants will be eligible to receive up to $100,000 in matching grants through the Sheila Hixon Behavioral Health Services Grant Program. More than 389,000 veterans and 53,000 active-duty service members call Maryland home and according to the American Psychological Association, veterans are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide. Organizations that receive grants can provide services including screening, delivery of evidence-based mental health and substance abuse treatment, case management and tele-health services. Authorities in Hagerstown are continuing their search for the prime suspect in the killing of Judge Andrew Wilkinson and a $10,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to his arrest. A car belonging to suspect Pedro Argote was found in a wooded area near Williamsport, Maryland on Saturday.  Sheriff Brian Albert said pending search warrants, the car will be checked for any evidence, but they are searching the immediate vicinity for any possibility that Argote is hiding in the area..  

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Public Health has announced it will be providing equipment to EMS agencies across the state to support overdose response.  Through $1.5 million in federal funding from the Centers for Disease Control, the state has purchased syringes, atomizers, gloves, sharps containers, face shields, and other equipment to support West Virginia EMS agencies.  Jody Ratliff, EMS Director, said the overdose equipment will make a difference in support to the efforts of EMS agencies statewide.  The supplies will be distributed in November.

College campuses across the country are seeing demonstrations regarding the war in Israel, some coming down on the side of the Hamas terror organization.  Protestors at the University of Virginia carried pro-Palestinian signs and unidentified, masked students voiced their opinions to reporters, saying they are hoping Israel will be overthrown. Locally, WCBC news reached out to college campuses Frostburg State University and Allegany College of Maryland.  Both reported that there had been no demonstrations to date and that no official statement on the war was forthcoming from their administrations.  

A unique retirement was celebrated recently with the City of Cumberland. At the recent Mayor and City Council meeting, the retirement of Lieutenant Gina Kyle was recognized.  Kyle was the first female firefighter with the Cumberland Fire Department, starting in December of 1998.  Fire Chief Shannon Adams said that Kyle is from a long-line of firefighters including her grandparents, uncle, and father.  Kyle held positions as EMS and Fire Instructor as well as being a Paramedic.  Chief Adams added other projects Kyle has been involved with in her career…

October is National Farm to School Month and the Department of Agriculture is announcing a new effort to improve students' access to high-quality food, in Maryland and nationwide. While the typical approach to school food procurement is usually focuses on cost, the U-S-D-A is partnering with the nonprofit Urban School Food Alliance to provide training and technology to school districts to help improve the quality of school food.
