Two-way Traffic on Cecelia Street

The City of Cumberland would like to notify the public that Cecelia Street will be converted to two-way traffic in the coming weeks. This traffic change was approved by the Mayor and City Council on August 4, 2021, under Council Order 26,849. The Cumberland Street Department will be performing temporary improvements to install pavement markings and necessary signage to facilitate two-way traffic. Street parking will continue to be available along the southern curbline. State Fire Marshal Warns of Social Media Trend Leading to Fires

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is alerting the public to a concerning new trend circulating on social media. Students insert electrically conductive objects into the charging ports of school-issued and personal electronic devices. This reckless behavior has been linked to several incidents resulting in fires, smoke, and property damage. As of May 5, 2025, authorities have documented multiple instances of what is being called the "Chromebook Challenge," where students insert items such as pencils and other metallic objects into device charging ports, causing short circuits. Video Tribute Honoring High School Seniors

Allegany County Public Schools continues video tribute for each high school by honoring graduating seniors who have made outstanding contributions to their class. The achievement awards highlight students who are in the top 10% of their class in academic excellence, who have made special accomplishments in the areas of fine arts, service learning, or career and technical education, and for those students who have demonstrated superior leadership qualities.   Videos will be available on the ACPS website (under the Accolades, Class of 2025 section), Vimeo site and the ACPS Facebook page on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, by 6 p.m.  

George Street water main replacement update

Continuing on Monday, May 12th, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., South George Street from Baltimore Street to Union Street will be closed to traffic for a water main replacement. The project will continue through the end of May. There will be no interruption of water service.

Governor Moore Noncommittal on Reparations Bill

With two more bill signing ceremonies to come, Governor Wes Moore has yet to commit to his intentions regarding a bill passed by the legislature creating a Reparations Commission.  Moore could sign the bill, let it go into law without his signature or, potentially, veto it. There are two more bill signing ceremonies scheduled, on May 13 and May 20.

Bench Warrant Arrest

On Thursday, May 8th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Patrick Lee Thompson, 32, of Cumberland, MD. Thompson was arrested on three active Bench Warrants issued by the Allegany County Circuit Court on April 28th, 2025. All three warrants allege Thompson violated the terms and conditions of probation that had been placed upon him due to previous convictions on charges of first and second-degree assault. Thompson was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance, where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond. Criminal Summons Served

On Thursday, May 8th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a Criminal Summons on Aden Markwood Stonestreet Jr, 46, of Flintstone, MD. The summons was issued as a result of a theft investigation that was reported on April 15th. On that date, it is alleged that Stonestreet stole a wallet and its contents after finding the property unattended at a Greene St business. On this date, Stonestreet was served the summons and released, pending trial in District Court. ARRESTED – Aden Markwood Stonestreet Jr.  W/M 46yo CHARGES – Theft $100 to under $1500

Two Sentenced For Drug Distribution

Two people have been sentenced for selling large quantities of crystal methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, and heroin in Berkeley, Morgan, and Hampshire Counties. Andrew Ross Hose of Bunker Hill, West Virginia, was sentenced to 293 months in prison. Bradley Allen Lopp, also of Bunker Hill, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison.  According to court documents and statements made in court, Hose and Lopp worked with the drug trafficking organization to sell controlled substances in the Eastern Panhandle.

DNR Hikes At Dans Mountain

Monthly hikes are coming to Dans Mountain State Park. The park is partnering with Westmar Middle and Georges Creek Elementary schools to offer the hikes on the Lonacona Loop Trail. Ranger Mac will lead the hikes that are 4.5 miles long. The hikes will take place once per month beginning at 10am, starting May 17 through October 18.  Hikers should meet at the trailhead across from the pool. The Community Schools program will provide lunch after each hike.

Shapiro Visits Bedford

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was in Bedford County on Wednesday to announce a number of grant awards in the state. Shapiro said the grants are going to prepare shovel-ready sites for business.  His appearance was at the 151-acre site for the Bedford County Business Park where $2.8 million dollars will be used to develop nine lots…    “Here in Bedford County, we are literally turning dirt into jobs.
