Allegany Cadets Rank in National American Rocketry Challenge
The Cumberland Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol traveled Saturday to The Plains, Virginia to compete in the National American Rocketry Challenge (TARC). Team Cumberland, coached by 2nd Lt Rich VanBlarcom who also serves as the squadron’s Aerospace Education Officer earned a spot at the national competition by ranking among the top 100 teams out of more than 1,000 nationwide. Cumberland Still has the Second to Lowest Trash Rate despite Increase in FY 2026 Budget
The Cumberland Mayor and City Council formally adopted the budget for Fiscal Year 2026 at Tuesday’s meeting. The total budget is a little over $82.5 million which includes general fund, special purpose funds, water and trash. Increased water rates will be voted on during the next meeting, but the increased trash rates were accepted last night. Residential customers’ monthly trash fee will be $28.55 a month. WV Energy Increase Could Eliminate Income Taxes
Governor Patrick Morrisey’s Power and Energy Consumption Act enables the Mountain State to expand their energy resources and accelerate the end of state income tax.. The new law expands microgrid development, utilizing the state’s coal and natural gas resources. Morrisey said doing so will increase jobs, educational opportunities and ultimately economic development… “50% of those proceeds of the revenue that comes in would go to a fund that would ultimately eliminate the state income tax.”

Stores Will Be Open During Memorial Day Parade
The Memorial Day Parade takes place this Monday, May 26, in Downtown Cumberland for the first time in 50 years. Senior Benefit Card For Farmers Markets
The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program offers a one-time, annual benefit of $50 that low-income seniors 60 years and older can use between July and November to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey directly from farmers at farmers markets and farm stands across the state. MD State Highway Administration Closes MD 68 Bridge
Starting Wednesday, May 21, the Maryland State Highway Administration crews will close and temporarily detour the MD 68 Bridge, Clean Spring Road near Williamsport in Washington County. Debris accumulation under the structure due to last week’s storm will be removed. A local detour will be in place Wednesdays through Fridays from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. each day, weather permitting. SHA expects to have all the debris under the bridge cleared in approximately two weeks.
